“Pioneer of alternative hip-hop revisits the rage in his stomach”
When the name of rapper ASAP Rocky began to make the rounds on Google, our first thought was of Ian Bavitz. One hopes that a spelling misunderstanding does not cause the forgetting of the big, clumsy New Yorker who, under the name Aesop Rock, has since written 15 years of the most disconcerting pages in the history of alternative hip hop.
Skelethon is reassuring in two ways: First, everything—from the originality of his production and his indie-rock vibeto his inimitable sense of surrealism—is multiplied tenfold by his wish to record in complete autonomy (alone, independently). Secondly, he possesses in this sixth album an ill-being and a fury other backpackers don’t know how to replicate. Bavitz has recently dealt with the loss of his best friend and dissolution of his marriage, his [rage and ill-being] would have been out of place otherwise. He would have to be moreso if this disc goes unnoticed.
Obviously it makes more sense in French.. rough translation edited for clarity.
